J R and Venus Serena grab Group One spoils
The golden run of form enjoyed by John and Venus Serena has reached new heights at Alexandra Park this evening. Despite a less than ideal 2nd line draw the combination have run out emphatic winners in the Group One Nevele R Caduceus Club Fillies Classic.
The meteoric rise to the top by this filly has been quite stunning. After what was just her 5th race start, she can now lay claim to two goup race successes and a New Zealand record. At her 2nd race start in the Group Three American Ideal Stakes, she not only beat home a number of tonight's opponents, but also took over a second off the previous New Zealand record for a 2yr old filly over 2000m. However, tonight's performance on an "off" track, took her to whole new echelon in terms of the 2yr old filly ranks.
Tonight's success is a real testament to the training skills of "Uncle Geoff", Geoff Dunn and a great reward to loyal stable clients in the Sandford'. Such was the nature of tonight's victory, connections can only look forward positively to big race features over coming weeks.
Venus Serena and Johnny out-tough a game Angelina Jolie at Group One level.
John had already cashed in earlier in the night deputising for brother Dexter, winning the Sires' Stakes Prelude on the Kevin Townley trained Sheemon. Sheemon once again reminded punters that he is not a horse to be forgotten in the upcoming 3yr old trotters features, getting home over the odds paying $17 in his half length victory over Paramount Queen.
Sheemon an upset winner at 17-1 odds in the Trotters Sires Stakes Prelude.
