Big team head to Nelson
After the all the buzz and excitement of last week's jewels weekend, it will be somewhat of a welcome reprieve this week as a big team head north to the annual two day Nelson meeting. 8 runners will line up on the 1st day this Friday including debutante Sheer Class and a newcomer to the stable in Comenche.
Sheer Class a 3yr old Live Or Die filly, out of the former good racemare Inisheer (5 wins) debuts in Race 3 a 2400m maiden pace. She has pleased connections to date with what she has done and impressed John in her qualifying run last week. An awkward draw will present some difficulties, but look for her to be running home and mark her down as one to follow.
I C U Darling in Race 4, had no luck last start after pushing forward from a wide draw early. He was caught out 3 wide for the 1st 1000m before finally finding the breeze. By then his race was well and truly run. A gear change has been made this week and coupled with a good draw, he must be a huge chance of earning his maiden victory at good odds.
Comenche in Race 8 is having his 1st start in the Westview colours. He was purchased as a replacement for the recently claimed Montecrengle, a horse that the syndicate had a lot of fun with. He has produced two good 3rds in strong fields at Addington of late. He has settled in well at the beach and looks a type of horse that could pick up a couple of wins at short notice.
Graduate Under Fire and Piper Heidsieck go around in the Cup Prelude, Race 9. They both produced good performances at Oamaru at their last start. Piper led and battled strongly for 4th, while Graduate Under Fire split the well performed pair of Best Deal Yet and Better To Be Bad in running 2nd. The stable have been happy with both since Oamaru. Piper loves the track having won this race and the cup at last year's meeting. Gavin gets on well with the horse and he must be a big chance to go back to back. Graduate Under Fire possesses such great stand start manners, he is sure to make them work from his frontline draw and be tough to beat again.
Gambler's Delight and Lumos will line up in Race 10. Gambler's Delight was seen to be doing her best work late last time after being pocketed 4 back in the running. The draw is not the best on this occasion (7), so she may be one to look at on the 2nd day. Lumos is a horse with a huge motor and while a model of consistency this camapign, was not quite at his peak last start. From his 2nd line draw, he will probably be driven for one crack at them and if he is anywhere near them on the turn, they will know he's in the race.
The final runner for Friday is Lauramegan in Race 11. She has gone 3 slashing races this time in and seems a lot stronger filly since a spell. It is a stronger field this time, but she has a favourable draw and is sure to be a big chance again.
Best Bet - Lumos
Best Eachway - Graduate Under Fire
Best Longshot - I C U Darling
