A big night at the Met
After a quiet weekend by stable standards last weekend, there are a number of bright chances at tomorrow night's Addington meeting. On what is an 11 race card, the stable are represented by 7 runners.
Race 1 - Cullens Spirit. Last Sunday's run at Rangiora for 3rd was a top effort and franked an improved run the previous start at Addington. There is no Instead Of or Abraxas in this week's field and added to that he has drawn very well. Jason "Gunman" Thomas again takes the reins. Providing he can reproduce those runs and utilise the draw, he is at least an eachway possibility.
Race 3 - Better Than Money and Comenche contest heat 4 of the Young At Heart series. Better Than Money had an awkward wide draw last start at Rangiora. He was forced to ease back early on before running home with purpose, finishing close up in 5th. The draw is not really a great help again (one on 2nd line) however, he may get an economical run and be finishing on well. Comenche has had a wee break since his last start second behind the impressive Copy My Past. Gavin Smith takes the drive with Johnny away. From a handy draw and anywhere near his peak, he does look a great winning hope.
Race 5 - Mach Banner. While this is only a small field, it is certainly not lacking in depth. The adavantage that Mach Banner may have over one or two others is race fitness - 3 starts for 2 wins and a second during the June/July period. With a small field he will get chance to finish over the top of them and chances are they will know he's in the race come the business end.
Mach Banner getting home narrowly over Lionels Meddle at his last start.
Race 7 - Kotare Mahal and Massimo. Kotare Mahal has been in super form, winning his last 3 starts on end. This is his 1st stand start, but the small field may negate any issues over his ability to step. Providing he cops the stand and gets a nice trip in what is a very handy field, he will be tough again. This is a boys' race and Jason takes the drive on Kotare Mahal. Matty Purvis will drive Massimo who has also been running nice races and was a solid second last time out in the amateurs. The key with Massimo is his stand start ability. If he can step and run, he could be a real chance at odds.
Race 8 - Blazin N Cullen. At 1st glance, his run only looked ordinary at Rangiora last Sunday. However, the track was very off by then and didn't suit runners down on the pegs. Back to the mobile this time and from a good draw, "Blaze" is drawn to get an economicial run for Gavin. Look for him to be barrelling home with his trademark finishing burst. Write him off at your peril!
