Gav delivers the goods for stable

The predictions of a good night for the stable were right on the mark with 2 wins, a second and a 3rd from just 7 runners.

The good thing for the night always looked to be Comenche in Race 3. Driven in authorative fashion by driver Gavin Smith, Comenche went round to take the lead 1400m out and from there he made things look easy, running home his last 800m in 57.7, his last 400m in 28.0, with an overall time of 2.23.4.  From just 9 starts for the stable, Comenche has built a tidy record with 2 wins and 4 seconds, for the Westview Racing No 5 syndicate. He looks sure to build on these efforts throughout the upcoming spring racing.

The second winner for the night was Blazin N Cullen in Race 8, a 3-5 win race over the 1950m. Defying his usual race pattern, "Blaze" was sent forward by Gavin at the 1000m after a couple of cheap quarters from leader Comply Or Die. He served it up to the leader from the 400m and dug real deep in the home stretch to record his 7th career victory from 26 starts for owner Ian Dobson. The final sectionals of 57.0 and 26.5 are ample proof of what a fine victory this was for the Christian Cullen 4yr old.

Blazin N Cullen digs deep for Gav to beat a strong intermediate grade field over the 1950m.

In the feature race of the night, favourite Mach Banner provided a good performance after leading for the last 1400m, only to be gunned down late by good mare Pembarton Shard. He looks in good stead for future assignments which will probably include the Maurice Holmes Vase in a fortnight.

The boys' race saw both stable runners get back early in a leader dominated race. Massimo and Matt Purvis made ground resolutely late to run a good 3rd, while Kotare Mahal ran home solidly in his first stand start after getting too far back in the running.

The final performance of note was from Cullens Spirit in Race One. He raced parked for the majority of the race before battling strongly for 3rd behind the impressive Upanatom. He looks to have run back into some good form and a well deserved win should not be far away.
