Good performances by the three year olds

On a night that was notable for the strong nor-wester and a front runners bias, strong performances were put forward by the 3yr olds in Nikola and Return To Sender.

Nikola competed in a very progressive field with some promising 3yr olds engaged. While drawn on the 2nd row, he received a nice run through early on. However, the Robbie Holmes drawn pair of Satori and Live At Speed were able to dominate early and John was obliged to race without cover for the last 1400m. While clearly having the toughest of runs in the race, Nikola never looked like flinching in a tough drive to the line and went down a very game 2nd to the pacemaking winner Satori. John was particularly happy with the run. "He's going great. He's going to turn into a real nice horse I reckon and after Xmas will be when we see the best of him."

Nikola a very game 2nd behind the Robbie Holmes trained Satori

One race later and it was the turn of Return To Sender in his quest for a Sires Stakes spot. As is usual with the colt, he flew the gate early before handing up to Dexter and favourite Regulus. Regulus was able to dominate from the top and went for home at the 400m. Return To Sender stuck to his task valiantly holding onto 2nd comfortably. The race was run in a very solid 2.22.5 for the 1950m, the last 800m in 56.1 and the last 400m in 26.9. Regulus was showing the benefits of a number of hard runs recently and appears to be hitting form at the right time. John was more than happy with his charge however and the way that he knuckled down in the run home. He looks in for a good 3yr old season.
