Jivin Cullen does a great job for the McKays

After a top run fresh up last week behind Isaiah, Jivin Cullen was let go in the market for tonight's 3200m Winter Cup. Allowed to pay nearly $14 on the tote, a superb frontrunning drive by Gavin Smith saw the 5yr old Christian Cullen gelding get home for win nine of his career. Owned by Rona, Clive and Sharon McKay, this was his first win of the season. He has consistently raced in top fields, including the Auckland Cup and the Interdom consolation. He has generally been competitive throughout, but when you meet horses the calibre of Terror To Love and Smolda you have to be on the top of your game.

Surprisingly tonight, Jivin Cullen and Gav were allowed to get through the first mile in a sedate 2.07, before running home in 1.57, narrowly holding out the hot favourite in Border Control. Congratulations to connections and well done on persevering with the horse during some leaner times!

In an interesting sidenote, trainer Robert Dunn won this race as a driver some 20 years ago, driving Burlington Bertie for his in-laws the Bagries.
