Superintendent gets the cash
In just his 3rd start for the stable, big American Ideal 4yr old Superintendent showed that he was progressing the right way with a narrow victory over a fast closing Franco Harrison. After missing away early on, he was allowed time to find his feet before being sent to the lead by John from the 1200m. Allowed to dictate things from there, he was forced to fight hard in the straight to just repulse a late challenge.
Sold to Australia as a younger horse, he failed to realise his true ability from limited opportunities. As a last hope he was brought back to New Zealand and assigned to the tutelage of Robert and John, who quickly liked what they saw. A big rolling type, Superintendent appears well placed to add to this tally over the coming months.

In other races for the day, it was Graduate Under Fire that looked a next upper after being narrowly beaten after being denied a run in the straight. In a driving finish, Graduate Under Fire and Return To Sender were both narrowly held out by a game Tuxedo Max. Both will have plenty of opportunities in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile in the day's feature the Methven Cup, Pure Power closed the curtain on what has been a very successful career, running an honest race before heading to the retirement paddock. The race was won by a much improved Franco Ledger, over last year's winner Jimmy Johnstone.
