Century of wins nears for stable
The two day Marlborough winter meet has seen some good success for the stable with two wins each of the days. Mach Denario completed a winning double while maiden Kotare Mahdi and Little Lion Man (Friday) achieved wins also. Added to this tally were three seconds and three thirds also.
Clearly the star of the show was Mach Denario with his double. On Friday he showed his toughness leading throughout over the 2300m mobile. Today though he settled back over the 2300m stand before being launched by Dexter from the 600m. Coming to the turn, he was stalking the lead pair and angled for an inside run. As soon as he cleared traffic he boomed to the lead going onto a convincing victory by 1.25 lengths. This was the Mach Three 4yr old's 5th win from 28 lifetime starts. He finally appears to be realising the ability that he first showed on the coast circuit at the end of 2013.
The win of Kotare Mahdi today was a great result for patient handling. Expectations were high in his first campaign, but a combination of bad manners and bad luck saw little return for connections. However, this time in he has appeared a much more settled horse and with four placings heading into today, a win was on the cards draw and all. Given time to find his feet early on, he was sent three wide by John at the 800m. After eyeballing the pacemaking Asmara Star before the turn, he found the lead turning for home and never looked like giving in in the run to the line. He looks likely to continue this run of form in the coming weeks.
The four wins have now elevated the stable's tally to 95 wins for the season, 34 behind runaway leaders the Purdon/Rasmussen stable and 32 ahead of the third placed Hope stable. John is placed 5th in the drivers' premiership with 79 wins, while Sam on 39 wins and Matt 13 wins have also had good seasons.
