No Doctor Needed produces massive first up run
While all the plaudits deservedly go to winner Christen Me, it was smiles all around from the No Doctor Needed team after tonight's Avon City Ford New Brighton Cup.
After stepping reasonably well, the big Mach Three 5yr old was asked to stretch out by John to challenge for the lead. However, he was made to work for the lead by first Bettor Dream and then Major Star, before having a good trip out in front from the 1400m. All the while, the two favoured runners Christen Me (in the 1-1) and Tiger Tara on Christen Me's back were both enjoying cushy runs.
Realising that the early work he had done would take its toll late in the race, John sent No Doctor Needed for home at the 300m. While claimed by Christen Me and the 200m and then Tiger Tara shortly after, he fought tenaciously to the line, only relinquishing third place to Bit Of A Legend right on the line.
In the lead up to tonight's race, John's biggest concern had been the conditioning of most of the other runners, that had either one or two runs under the belt. While ultimately this may have been a factor over the last 100m, it was probably the amount of work he was forced to do early in the race that had the biggest impact.
Back to the stables after the race and John was buzzing with the run of his charge. "He's going to improve so much with that run. Heck he's gone well."
Providing he pulls up well, it will be on to the Canterbury Classic in a fortnight's time as he seeks to improve his ranking for November's New Zealand Cup. The 3200m trip would appear to be right up his alley.
Pre-race and final touches are being applied Good job first up. Tough effort after leading.
