The Royal Garden delivers at big odds

The Royal Garden turned around a poor first up effort on the track a fortnight ago as he comprehensively dealt to a handy field of C2-C3 pacers at 23-1 odds.

After a nice trial at Ashburton the week before, The Royal Garden was confidently expected to perform well on the track a fortnight ago. However, on that occasion, in driver Dexter's words, "he never got going," eventually finishing a well beaten 10th. Turn the page and tonight the Mach Three 5yr old was disregarded by most, going out a largely unwanted 8th favourite.

Using his frontline draw to good effect, he was able to step well for driver John Dunn, leading early before handing up to favourite Tango's Delight. He was later pocketed three back as that runner opted to take a trail, but was always travelling like a winner. Once they turned for home, he was gifted a saloon passage up the passing lane as Gavin Smith elected to come out of the trail on Tango's Delight. He soon mastered the lead pair before running away to a convincing victory by almost two lengths in a handy 3.17 for the 2600m stand.

Tonight's victory was win four from 14 starts taking his stake-earnings to just over $29,000. He will have plenty of opportunities to add to this tally in the coming weeks.
