Good on ya Billy!

Auckland Cup Day has started on a good note for the stable, with Billy Badger defeating a good field in the second heat of the Breckon Farms Young Guns Series.

Owned by Ross and Angela Gordon, Billy Badger has impressed Robert from day one. "He is such a lovely guy to have around and I have always thought that it is his staying that is his real forte. I am sure that he will continue to get better as the season goes on and that we have got a real nice racehorse on our hands."

On the back of a closing quarter today in 26.2, Billy Badger has showed that he might have a lot more in his arsenal than just his toughness.

Billy Badger made his debut at Alexandra Park towards the end of November. After drawing wide on that occasion he fought well for third after being the only one to do any work in the running. A week later he was back at the park and after some steering issues on that occasion, again put in a top run for another 3rd this time behind the highly rated Vasari.

Going into today's race, Robert was confident of a good run. His work through the week had been good and if he was able to get that bit of luck, then he was always a big hope. John took luck out of it from the start, quickly assuming the lead role. He managed to get a comfortable lead time over the first 800m before running home over the last 800m in 56.2 and the 400m 26.2. While eyeballed by the hotpot Pacing Major from the 200m, he dug deep and was a deserving winner by a half head in 2.03.9 for the 1700m trip.

An Art Major colt, Billy Badger is out of an unraced Badlands Hanover mare in Lady Antebellum. His immediate big race target will be the Young Guns final in March.
