Our Mach, he's one tough bugger!

He's eight year's old and should be in the twilight of his racing career, but try telling that to Mach Cruiser, the pride and joy of the Westview Racing No 14 syndicate.

After racing on all three days of this week's West Coast circuit, you could be excused for thinking that it might seem insane lining up at Rangiora today in what was start four in an eight day period. However, after a top run for second at Reefton on Thursday, it seemed like the veteran was thriving on his big workload, so the decision was made to press on. When the rain started falling last night, Westview manager Nigel Armstrong was all smiles, especially after looking up the wet track record for the Mach Three 8yr old.

Reunited today with Gavin Smith who reined him home at Motukarara in November at big odds, Mach Cruiser started from the inside of the frontline for today's 2600m stand. While he bobbled away initially, he soon found his stride and was able to comfortably hold the lead. After some early pressure from Smoken Roman, Gavin made the decision to ease and take a trail for the last 1800m. That runner then enjoyed a soft lead for the next 1400, facing no pressure until the 400m, from where the tempo really stepped up. Turning for home it looked very much a two horse affair and it was a very confident Smith who popped off the trail to challenge at the 200m. He quickly gathered in the pacemaker and went to the line a convincing winner by half a length in what was a sedate 3.28.5 for the 2600m. With the last 800m in 60.2 and the 400m a more significant 28 seconds, it was little surprise that the back runners were not able to run on.

Today's win was Mach Cruiser's 9th from 68 starts and takes his stakes won to over $50,000. He has had the 10 starts for his current ownership and these have produced the two wins and over $12,000. Today's inclement weather had little impact on a number of hardy syndicate members that were there to cheer on their pride and joy.

A huge thanks to Robert, John and Gavin for their part in today's win.

Great work team! Mach Cruiser is home for win nine of his career
