Cullect A Guinness adds to formidable grass track record
In what was his second visit to the Oamaru grass track, Cullect A Guinness has again walked away with a dominating victory with a convincing one and a half length win in today's Oamaru Cup.
After two great efforts on the West Coast circuit at the end of December - 1st in the Wesport Cup off 30m and 3rd in the Reefton Cup off 40m - Cullect A Guinness was given a brief freshener before resuming at Addington last Friday night. In a fast run 2600m, won by Maverick in 3.10, Cullect A Guinness put in a a big run finishing 4th behind some smart pacers. Back to the grass today and John was very bullish on his horse's chance and simply thought that he would be too good.
Off 30m in today's feature, Cullect A Guinness began well and was eventually sent forward by John at the 1800m. He assumed the front at the 1600m, from the pacemaker in Franco Harrington and in his typical free-wheeling style in was loving his work out in front. Coming to the turn and the one threat to the favourite was Franco Harrington which briefly looked a big chance coming up the passing lane at the 200m. Given a a reminder to keep his mind on the job, Cullect A Guinness then rallied to his task and at the line was coming away again, an authoriative win in 4.00.7. The final sectionals of 800m 58.4 and 400m 28.5, made it difficult for anything to come from the back.
All kudos today again goes to Cullect A Guinness, which from 17 starts has now won eight races and has a further six placings. Owners the Higinbottoms are enjoying one hell of a ride with the Gotta Go Cullect 5yr old. The next assignment is unclear, but it may be that the 3200m journey of the Invercargill Cup is something that could be considered.
