Stunning finish in cup sees stable runners dead-heat!

As racing results go, the dead-heat of Graduate Under Fire - John and Joey Maguire - Ross, in yesterday's Marlborough Cup is about as good as they get. In a further matter of interest on the race Dalness Xchange, another stablemate, looked the absolute tragedy beaten in the race, running into the back of the two stablemates at the 50m, when still having plenty to offer.

Graduate Under Fire led throughout and had enjoyed a pretty good trip in front. However, on turning for home he did look under pressure from the breeze horse Jerry Garcia. However, under John's urgings, the old boy, the pride of Ray and Maureen Beale from Hilderthorpe, dug deep and in a driving finish held on to win the race. But in a neat twist, he was a joint winner of this year's cup with stablemate Joey Maguire, that had flashed home after being three deep on the markers throughout.

Joey Maguire had stepped well and had landed a nice run on the markers. Coming to the turn driver Ross Houghton was desperate for room and initially looked for a run through the middle. However, it was the inside that the gaps would come and as soon as he spied the room down there, the response was instant from the Art Major 5yr old who charged home, almost getting in the deciding stride. At the line though, commentator Matt Cross could not split the runners, neither driver appeared to know who had won and then ultimately it was the judge that would have the final say declaring a dead-heat.

The effort of Joey Maguire was even more special for Ross, who is one of the co-owners of Joey Maguire along with Kent Hunt, Marty Nicholson, Craig Nicholson and Geoff Cullen.

Congratulations must go to Robert and John for a superb training effort,  to the two drivers and to all the connections involved with the two horses. It topped off a great two days at Blenheim.

Double cause for celebration as Joey Maguire and Graduate Under Fire dead-heat cup
