Alta Las Vegas back on winners list

After copping an unfortunate injury at the start of December that derailed his December race assignmnents, it was good to see Alta Las Vegas return to the Alexandra Park track on Friday night.

While he was returning after a seven week break, which meant that he was vulnerable in some respects, a good trial at the Puke workouts the previous weekend suggested that he was pretty ready. Given a good barrier to work with, John asked the 3yr old Betor's Delight gelding to do his best work early and was able to find the top comfortably. However, he was soon strongly attended by second favourite Mastercraftsman which was also keen to find the front. A good battle ensued until the 1500m at which point John relinquished the lead, before quickly hopping out of the trail and again taking the lead off Mastercraftsman at the 1300m. John was then able to ease the pace somewhat for the next 500m, before beginning to up things again down the back with a 29.5 second quarter. On the turn he appeared to be travelling better than his opposition, but having done his share of work, he would always be vulnerable to a late finisher. That would come in the shape of Kenrick which after clearing a pocket boomed home to be beaten by an ever decreasing neck, as the last quarter was cut out in 28 seconds, the full journey in 2.40.8 for the 2200m.

Friday's win was the the third for Alta Las Vegas in 11 race starts and takes his stakes won to over $36,000. He is certain to have improved with the run and will have plenty of opportunities to add to his tally in the next month.
