Donegal Jimmy Dave gets in deciding stride in Manawatu feature

While a rank failure on day one of the two day Manawatu meeting, it was a different Donegal Jimmy Dave tonight as he put in strongly to win the feature race for the C3-C6 pacers by a nose over a very game Princess Kate.

Confidently suported on day one, Donegal Jimmy Dave galloped before the mobile despatch and settled at the back of the field. He never appeared happy at any stage and failed to run on, running second to last.

It is amazing the difference that a couple of days can make at times. Junior driver Matt Purvis who is up with the Robert Dunn team reported that the horse had come through the race well and that he could easily surprise. Partnered tonight by one of the top  northerm reisnman in Scott Phelan, he went forward early and was able to slot into a handy position three back on the markers. With a lap to go, Phelan took the opportunity to pop off the markers and was then obliged to race in the breeze over the last lap outside the pacemaking Princess Kate. Coming to the 400m and that runner really applied the pressure and for a brief time, Donegal Jimmy Dave appeared flat. However, once asked for his big effort by Phelan, he dug deep and got in the deciding stride right on the line to win in 3.09.08 for the 2500m.

Tonight's win was his sixth win in 42 starts and takes his stakes to over $38,000.
