Grass track king adds County Cups Final to resume
A horse that personifies the term tough, Cullect A Guinness was simply too good at Methven this afternoon, putting paid to a good field of pacers in the Country Cups Final.
Having overcome his 30m handicap with aplomb early, John was able to position Cullect A Guinness into a nice sit in the one-one throughout. A free-wheeling Here We Go Again kept up a strong pace in front from the outset with stablemate Graduate Under Fire well placed in the trail. With such a fast tempo being set throughout there were no moves until the 400m, when all the back runners started getting busy. However, it was evident a long way out that Cullect A Guinness was the one that was travelling and when pulled into the centre of the track at the 300m, he quickly mastered the pacemaker and put three lengths on the field. While initially Callenberg and then favourite Seel The Deal lodged strong late runs, the son of Gotta Go Cullect was always travelling too well and went to the line a convincing winner by two and a quarter lengths over Seel The Deal, with Callenberg a game third a head away.
Today's win was the 9th from just 21 starts for Cullect A Guinness, which has now banked $85,522 for his owner Peter Higinbottom. A horse that has always struggled with soundness issues, he has rarely put in a poor run the whole season. In his previous start he was a game second behind top pacer Locharburn in that horse's New Zealand record over the 2600m.
A great stayer that he is, it seems likely that Cullect A Guinness will take his place alongside stablemates Franco Nelson and Mighty Flying Mac in Saturday night's Easter Cup to be run over 3200m at Group One level.
Callenberg was a game third after following his stablemate all the way, while Graduate Under Fire battled away well in 6th place.
