Rangiora Classic set to be a great race
While many are labelling today's Rangiora Classic a two horse race between Locharburn and Christen Me, don't go writing off the chances of the very much in form Mighty Flying Mac.
Good enough in the spring to win the Hannon Memorial over his then stablemate Christen Me, Mighty Flying Mac did tend to battle against the very best in his assignments thereafter. However, the decision to shift his training to the beach and the Robert Dunn stable has proved an inspired one. In three starts he has gained the two wins and a Group One third behind Locharburn in last month's Easter Cup. It was the most recent win over the 2600m stand and from a 35m handicap that suggests that if there was to be an upsetter then he is the most likely to cause it. Despite having to do a power of work in a swiftly run race, he was allowed to coast to the line over the last 50m to win comfortably in just a tick outside Christen Me's New Zealand record. He is in career best form.
The reappearance of Christen Me will attract a lot of interest. There is no doubting his credentials and at Monday's Addington trials, he looked very ready for his resumption. The in-form horse is Locharburn. He followed up his convincing Easter Cup win with an unlucky second behind Field Marshall last time out. He runs his last race for the seaon today and with his new pilot Blair Orange today will be ready to go out on a high.
Cullect A Guinness is the other stable runner in today's feature and he is another that can't be written off. He did a lot of work in the Field Marshall race last time and was a close up 4th after fighting hard all the way to the line. He has had a great season and always puts forwards his best efforts.
