Stable runners may hold the key to today's Pick Six.
After two winning runs on the first day and some good placings also, John is happy with where his team is at going into day two. The only element that he was frustrated by was the weather, that does threaten to spoil the show, as it did at Nelson a fortnight ago.
The "good thing" for the day does again appear to be top three year old Franco Cristiano. Having raced parked for the last 1000m on the first day, he did appear vulnerable as the field turned for home, with his main threat Celestial Arden getting one last crack at him, but he responded as class horses do, going to the line a convincing winner by a neck.
Today he runs in Race Seven and is drawn to lead from barrier one. He should be too good again and will no doubt be everyone's anchor as they look to tackle today's $50,000 Pick Six.
Dancing In The Dark gave driver Matt Purvis his 10th win for the season on the first day and did impress winning her maiden race against a few nice types on day one. Positioned well early after securing a good run through from the second line, Purvis sent the American Ideal 4yr old mare forward at the 1200m to take the lead. Thereafter she set a strong tempo in front, but was constantly looked at in front by second favourite Pradas Ideal Darling that momentarily took the lead turning for home. Given more rein at the 200m though Dancing In The Dark responded to her driver's urgings and went to the line a neck winner in 2.53.8 for the 2300m.
Today Dancing In The Dark tackles a field of C1 fillies and mares. While a step up in company, she has also been rated by connections and could easily go back-to-back to depending on the run. She is a good eachway hope anyway in what is the first leg of the Pick Six.
Blood And Whisky contests the second leg of Pick Six, Race Five. In his first start for the stable on Friday, he was very good. He trotted well all the way, before losing ground on the last bend. Once straightened up, he really flew home over the last 200m, to be beaten two and a half lengths. Provided he has benefitted from that run, he is a definite eachway hope today.
Letspendanitetogetha is in a great patch of form and went down fighting on the first day. He will start a warm favourite in Race Six. Sent forward to sit in the breeze at the 1300m on the first day, he just had to do a little bit too much work in the race. While he came up a half length short in second, he never shirked his task and deserves another win today.
The Marlborough Cup is run over the 3200m today and is Race Eight and the 5th leg of the Pick Six. Highview Freddy and Graduate Under Fire are the two stable runners and always give a good account. Their first day placings - Highview Freddy (2nd) and Graduate Under Fire (3rd) were both very nice runs and the extra distance today is no problem to either. They are both winning hopes and you would want both on your Pick Six ticket.
The final stable runner today is Yukon Cloud in Race Two. She simply had to do too much work on day one. While drawn wide today, expect a better run and she is a place hope anyway.
