"Nelson" on song for tomorrow's Kaikoura Cup
It has been a case of all going to plan so far for Franco Nelson in his quest for New Zealand Cup glory and tomorrow's Kaikoura Cup sees another opportunity for him to measure up against many of his opponents ahead of this year's two mile feature.
While initially only a thought on the radar, the Kaikoura feature will instead be the last major hitout for Franco Nelson ahead of the cup.
John felt that in many respects the horse had done too well since his unlucky run in the Canterbury Classic at his last start and was back at the workouts with his charge 12 days ago in what was a winning run.
"He's about as good as he has been," said John. "The Kaikoura Cup will give me a real good line on him though and help decide if we go to Perth for the Inter Dominions as well."
This year's Kaikoura Cup is a quality line-up though with Smolda, Titan Banner and Messini all proven performers and big hopes in this year's cup.
Other big chances from a stable point of view on the day are Billy Badger in Race Three and Kotare Yael in Race Nine. Billy Badger made really good ground in the Sires Stakes heat at Addington last time and if he can overcome the draw is a big winning hope. Kotare Yael met a very smart one last time in Mr Mojito and to be fair there are no horses of his class in tomorrow's line-up, although he too has a tricky draw to overcome.
