Winning run continues for Smith
A convincing winner last week in junior drivers company, Letspendanitetogetha was again too good tonight combining with Craig Smith for a week-week double. Drawn perfectly in one, Letspendanitetogetha showed enough speed to hold up early on, before securing a perfect trail behind the well supported Eh Ef El.
Following a solid lead time, Eh Ef El was softened up through the middle of the race by Blade and Loren Lester, but still managed to cut out some smart quarters. Coming to the turn he was under seige, particularly from the swooper Franco Saxon. But as with last week, Craig never panicked and when he was able to secure the passing lane run from the 200m, he kept pushing his drive on, claiming the lead inside the 100m, before rounding out a solid neck win in a quick 2.20.9 for the 1950m over a very game Eh Ef El.
Tonight's win is the 5th from just 17 starts for Letspendanitetogetha and continues a good run for his owners Reg Storer and Terry McDonald. With a further seven minor placings, he is doing a great job for his connections and has taken his stakes won to over $39,000.
The win is another good indicator of the fine progress that Craig Smith is making as a driver. From just 23 drives he has registered four wins this season, including one as an owner/driver with Cimarron a horse that he claimed earlier in the season. Craig looks in for a great season and it will be great to see him make a real impression amongst his peers.
A race earlier and American Tart was unable to deliver after being confidently backed. Drawn the horror draw of six over the mile trip, she went forward early and led at the 1400m. However, she faced constant pressure down the back straight after running a very fast first 800m. As brave as she is, she looked under a lot of pressure turning for home, but battled away for 5th behind convincing winner Emily Blunt that had the cold shot at the leaders, rounding out the mile in a smart 1.53.2.
