Living Legend ends long run of outs for Westview
It has been 14 months and 33 race starts, but the long drought ended today for Living Legend, the pride and joy of the Westview Racing No 13 syndicate. Unlucky on day one at Blenheim, today he turned up with his A game, racing parked throughout for driver Ross Houghton, before kicking too well in the run home for favourite and stablemate Hayden's Meddle, driven by John Dunn.
Turn the clock back 13 months and things were looking very rosey for all those involved in the horse after a third placing in the Westport Cup and placings on the final two days of the coast circuit. However, a loss of form through the Autumn then saw the horse sent north to the Pukekohe stable of Robert. He never really copped the right-handed way of going and was sent back to Woodend for a spell. A third in his resumption was a confidence booster, but again his form tapered off and it was left to a stint in the Amateurs for him to regain some useful form.
Taken north for the Nelson/Marlborough circuit, Living Legend produced a good third on day one, before being taken on after leading on day two, eventually fading to 7th. It was a first day miss on day one of the Marlborough meet on Friday that perhaps was the best pointer to his chances today, but even the eternal optimist, Westview manager Nigel Armstrong was hoping for another placing today rather than looking to a possible upset win.
Living Legend began well, but was denied the early lead, ending up parked, a position that he occupied throughout. In a strongly run race, he mastered the pacemaker Danse Macabre just before the turn, pinched a two length break and then held on for a strong win by one and a half lengths in a smart 2.51.54 for the 2300m. Hayden's Meddle was a strong finishing second after coming from a mile back, while Dream To Reality battled after doing a lot of work in the running.
Today's win was Living Legend's 4th from 47 starts and takes his stake-earnings to over $37,000. The clear message out of today's win is that if you persevere, you will eventually prevail! The win is also a reward to the many loyal syndicate members that have followed the horse through the best of times and the worst of times. Today, you finally get your reward guys.
