The Brooklyn Brawler tough effort in running second in Sapling Stakes
While bettered on the day by a very good Cole Porter from the Geoff Dunn stable, connections would have to be very happy with the run of The Brooklyn Brawler that showed speed and toughness in running second, in a time just outside the race record.
Sent forward early by John in a quest to find the lead, The Brooklyn Brawler was made to work for the lead over the first 400m before crossing at the 1200m. Once in front, he always looked to be travelling strongly and set up consistently strong sectionals through the first 1200m of the race. From the 400m, John really looked to put the pressure on the chasing pack and it was evident a long way out that if there was going to be a threat, it was the one that had sat on his back throughout.
In a last 400m run in a very fast 26.4, it took Cole Porter the length of the straight to get the better of The Brooklyn Brawler, before going away over the last 50m to win by a comfortable two lengths in a very fast 1.53.9.
While all credit goes to the winner, in what has been a big week for The Brooklyn Brawler, he did not lose any kudos with his run and fought all the way to the line. His was the notable run on the day in terms of the stable runners. Other runs of note included:
Out Of Aces that produced a nice run for third in his maiden race. He continues to improve all of the time.
Living Legend fought well for third in his race won by Burn Off. After leading early, he handed up to the pacemaking winner that made it hard for those behind him, running home his last 800m in 55.4 and his last 400m in 26.5.
