Harness Jewels Qualifiers
After the last day of qualifying at Oamaru on Sunday, there are four stable runners that will contest various sections in this year's Harness Jewels to be run at Ashburton on 3 June.
In the two year old Emerald for the colts and geldings, Alta Maestro is second on the list behind Spankem, the winner of Friday night's Sires Stakes. He was a game 4th in Friday's race after leading and copping a lot of pressure in front. He battled strongly in the run home. He looks sure to run a very quick mile on jewels day, especially from a favourable front-line draw.
In the two year old Ruby for the trotters, the enigmatic Sundees Son has qualified in 9th spot. In his big assignment, the Sires Stakes for the trotters on Friday night, he again did his chips in early with a gallop. Robert and John will be working overtime to get him ready for jewels day.
The other two qualifiers are Crackamoa and Cmeerock in the four year old categories.
Cmeerock (in picture) qualified 7th in the four year old Diamond, where a late qualifier in Picadilly Princess looks sure to start a dominating favourite.
Crackamoa has turned into such a consistent performer since at the Woodend Beach stable and secured his top 12 spot with a fast finishing third on Friday after starting from a tricky second line draw.
In other news, Bevans Cullen returned to form in style on Sunday at Oamaru. A joint backmarker off a 30m handicap he went forward to assume the lead inside the last lap in his R50 and faster assignment. Heavily attacked over the last 800m of the race he showed real tenacity for driver Tim Williams to register win six of his 32 start career. He had to be tough on the day with the final 800m run in 55.7 and the final 400m in 27.9. He is now assessed as an R81 after this win.
