Three year olds readying for Sires Stakes

Three year olds readying for Sires Stakes

It is that time of the year when the big names are about to hit the track and in terms of the three year old stars, Sires Stakes Heats are just round the corner. Tonight at Addington and Alexandra Park, it is the turn of The Brooklyn Brawler (in picture) and Alta Maestro to take the right steps towards these targets.

Last season's Kindergarten Stakes winner for the two year olds, The Brooklyn Brawler had little luck towards the end of his two year old season, with a succession of bad draws making things tough for him. However, he has had a good winter and John is very pleased with the horse going into tonight's race.

"He has had the three runs at trials and workouts and has improved massively through each of these."

"The workout run last week should have topped him off nicely."

He meets a handy sort of field this evening and will have to do it tough at some part to overcome his wide draw. Ironically his toughest opposition tonight is another three year Pats' Delight that has drawn perfectly in barrier one. So while he may need luck tonight, he is a good horse and look for a big run from him. All going well he will join Tuapeka Trick in next week's Sires Stakes Heat at Addington.

Also heading towards a Sires Stakes heat, but in this case at Cambridge, is Alta Maestro. As has been well documented, he mixed it with the very best last season as a two year old, putting in a host of big performances. He too has come back superbly according to Robert.

"He's great and I think we will see some pretty special stuff from him this season."

Tonight in his lead-up at Alexandra Park, he meets a smallish field of six runners. To be driven for the first time by Tony Herlihy, he should simply be too good for them. Safely through tonight, the Cambridge Sires Heat is next up next week.

Aside from The Brooklyn Brawler, there are seven other stable runners at Addington this evening.

First up is Carley Maguire in Race Three. Already a winner as a trotter, she did have support for her pacing debut a fortnight ago but was a little disappointing. Tonight she has drawn well and must at least have a place hope.

Missinmemate in Race Four has tended to be a bit in and out in his races, but was superbly handled by John to score at Oamaru on Sunday. Tonight he is paired with stable junior reinsman Bronson Munro, a very capable reinsman, but newly back in the game. If the real Missinmemate turns up again this evening then he is again a big winning hope.

There are three stable reps in Race Seven - Billy Badger, Alta Orlando and Bite The Bullet. In what is an incredibly even race, all three must be accorded a lot of respect. While it is never an easy task off 30m over 2600m, if the real Alta Orlando turned up tonight he would probably be too good. He lost his chance early on at Oamaru after playing up at the start.

The final runner this evening at Addington is Spondulicks in Race Eight. He has run a host of good races and there are probably no more deserving runners at Addington tonight seeeking their first win than him.

All in all there are some bright prospects for this evening and with a ripper day today in Christchurch, there should be a good crowd in attendance this evening.
