Spondulicks gets deserved maiden win
It was a win that had a little bit of luck attached to it, but no-one would begrudge Spondulicks his maiden win tonight at start fifteen of his career. Once again it was that expert catch driver Gavin Smith that got the job done.
Able to hold up for the early lead from his inside barrier this evening, Spondulicks handed up the lead to hotpot Ready To Rumble at the 1400m and enjoyed the best of runs thereafter.
Turning for home, he looked to be travelling well with plenty to offer, but the favourite had produced what had looked like the winning break at the 150m, before blowing into a gallop at the 100m, gifting the race to Spondulicks, that looked like it would get very close anyway.
With seven placings already, he has been a consistent horse and he looked over the odds as a 6-1 shot tonight.
Earlier in the evening, The Brooklyn Brawler produced an excellent first up run for second after doing plenty of work in the race. From a wide draw, he pulled back to near last early before being sent forward three wide at the 1400m, to breeze. Still travelling well with 400m to go, he put the pressure on leader Sporstcaster at the 200m, momentarily taking the lead, before being gunned down late in the piece by the favourite Pat's Delight that had enjoyed the perfect trail throughout. He will progress now to next Friday's Sires Stakes heat.
In the main go of the night over the 2600m stand, it was Whittaker that proved too good after also enjoying a perfect sit in the trail throughout. The Robert Dunn stablemates all put in great runs though with Bite The Bullet second, Billy Badger third and Alta Orlando 4th. Alta Orlando in particular should be one to follow out of tonight's race. His was a big run off his 30m handicap. The stand start manners were good tonight and he did look the winner when he hit the lead at the 200m. It was only a tough trip that cost him.
Up north Yagunnakissmeornot was very good in running third at Alexandra Park in a quickly run trot over the 1700m. She received a nice run throughout and kept coming in the run to the line to go down narrowly.
