Fitzgerald magic produces overdue win for Lovetodream

Lovetodream has to be one of the most consistent mares in commission, with three second placings and five third place finishes in her last eight starts. But today, it was junior driver Andrew Fitzgerald that conjured up the winning potion with a confident drive that saw her home a convincing one and a half length winner.

A last start third in the Listed Nevele R Sires' Stakes Mares Classic on Show Day appeared great form when assessed against today's field. On that occasion she was beaten just one and a half lengths by Bonnie Joan one of the top mares in the county. As much of a standout that she did appear today, it was not going to be a case of simply turn up and win after drawing barrier nine.

Dragged back early on by Fitzgerald, Lovetodream settled in the last few inside the last mile. As the field came off the back the last time, Lovetodream was still well back patiently handled for one run at them. As the field turned for home, she was looming ominously with her run, five and six wide. Widest but one, she swept to the lead at the 250m mark and quickly put three lengths on her opponents. It was only a late finisher in Mossdale Rose that narrowed the margin at the line.

Today's win was the sixth of her 27 start career for Lovetodream`. With a further 12 placings, she has been a wonderful mare for her owners, Martin and Shirley Cummings, Gary and Kerri Woodham and Brent and Suzanne Williams. These connections earlier raced Kabet and Better Than Money out of the Robert Dunn stable.

It was a very happy Fitzgerald with his victory salute reminiscent of another Robert Dunn junior driver Bronson Munro down at Central a few years ago. This was Fitzgerald's second win as a driver for the season from just the 14 drives. One of the real characters of harness racing, Fitzgerald is a trainer in his own right and works out at the beach in the mornings. He also works for HRNZ, where one of his projects has been the recently revamped Trot Tech that comes out each race day morning and has been a welcome addition for punters.
