John looking to carry on a good run of form
By his own high standards, the start to this season, had been a quiet one for number one stable driver John Dunn. However, a great run of form over cup week, has been followed by more success over the last couple of days, both from catch drives. John looks to have a great chance of success in one of the day's features at Methven, the Green Mile for the trotters, in which he will again partner Harriet Of Mot.
Harriet Of Mot was in dominant form last weekend at Geraldine where she beat a smart field of trotters, including Dominion Handicap placegetter Monty Python. She appeared to handle the grass track surface with ease. Today's field appears a touch harder with the very good trotter Great Things Happen engaged and looking to get his campaign back on track after a disappointing Dominion Handicap miss. Chuck in Destiny Jones that appeared more than a touch unlucky in that same race and it is certainly a smart line-up.
On her day, Harriet Of Mot is certainly up to any in the country and if she can overcome a wide frontline draw today, she is certain to give her big syndicate of owners one hell of a ride. She is back in form and that is ominous for her opponents today.
John starts his day with a catch drive on Razor in the first for Anj Mugford. Unlucky after an early check last time at Motukarara, Razor had looked very smart in winning at the cup trials a few weeks ago. A five year old Sundon gelding, he is a real freewheeler and if he is able to miss any early interference this time, he could be the real upsetter to start the day at nice odds.
Diamonds N Cash is a stable runner and John's next drive in Race Four. Owned by Breckon Racing, Diamonds N Cash is a three year old Rocknroll Hanover gelding and had his first two starts up north for Robert. He produced handy efforts in both of these and has since produced a nice workout run in the south. He is well drawn and clearly a good eachway prospect in a very open field.
John drives Alta Orlando for the stable in the day's pacing feature the Green Mile. He was good at Orari in a swiftly run contest over the 2800m. The small field will aid his cause even further and if he can be better mannered behind the gate, do not be surprised to see him take this out at good odds. Toughest to beat are definitely James Dean and A G's White Socks, both of which are well served with the barriers.
John combines with Lolita Franco in Race Eight for Rodney Dickson. She was just ok first up at Motukarara, but should improve on that run. She is a place hope.
The final drive today for John is Take After Me in Race Ten. Trained by Glenn Scott, this combination has combined well previously and were just denied victory at Ashburton during Cup Week. He steps well, likes the grass and is at least a place hope in another open field.
The final interest from a stable point of view is the boys race. Bronson again combines with Summer Wealth, while Andrew drives his own one Black Art. Summer Wealth showed some huge speed from the second line last week to lead, but then peaked on his run. John felt that he had to do a bit too much on that occasion, but he also blew hard afterwards, suggesting that he would have improved with the run. He should appreciate the draw and gives Bronson a great hope of his first win for the season.
Black Art has had little luck at times, but has raced really well for Andrew. He will have to do no work here from the ace and look for him to finish the race off strongly. He looks the biggest danger to Summer Wealth considering their good draws.
