Sundees Son and Valloria good chances in strong Hambletonian field

In terms of the quality of field, you would be hard pressed to see a better field for the three year old Hambletonian than that fielded this afternoon. The quality two year olds of last season in Renezmae, Stress Factor and Sundees Son (in photo), are joined by a new crop of exciting three year olds led by Valloria and Luby Lou.

From a sheer ability point of view, Sundees Son was as good as any going around last season. However, manners were his undoing in the feature two year old trots late in the season and we never really saw the best of him. It has been a very patient handling of Sundees Son going into today's race. There was the impressive resumption at Addington on Cup Day, when after breaking early, he staged a big recovery to win easily. His only other start was on the second day at Nelson, where after going away well, he broke losing all hope.

At last week's Rangiora workouts and driven by today's driver Gavin Smith, Sundees Son did all that was expected of him in winning and running home in some good sectionals. He looked ready to go. Third in the same trial was stablemate Valloria, which rates a big chance this afternoon.

Valloria owned by the Neumanns', sponsors of today's big trot has done all that could be expected in his three starts. He was a fast closing third when late clear on the first day at Nelson, was a winner on the second day, and then followed this up last time by winning the Orari Challenge Stakes for the three year olds over Majestic Man. He is a star on the rise.

Having drawn poorly at Orari, Valloria cops the perfect draw today and looks sure to benefit from a nice run throughout. Sundees Son on the other hand, will have to do work at some point, but he is capable of doing so.

Outside of our two hopes today, you could not help by be impressed by Renezmae first up. She really let down to get up and beat Bonnie Highlander on that occasion. She has a nasty draw to overcome, but has the ability to do so. She deserves to start favourite. Then there are the two All Stars runners. Stress Factor has past experience on the board and is well drawn, while Luby Lou, has been seen to good effect at the trials and will be another to watch out for, as will the two Williamson runners that you can never dismiss the chances of either.

All in all, this is certain to be a fantastic race and good luck to our two runners today in Sundees Son and Valloria.
