Billy Badger back and winning at Addington
It had been a long old haul between wins for Billy Badger, but on Friday at Addington, given a perfect run by Dexter Dunn, he was way too good for a nice field headed by Tiger Thompson.
So consistent since returning to southern racing about a month ago, Billy Badger looked a big chance on Friday night. Able to lead early on, he was then able to hand up to the favourite Tiger Thompson, a noted leader. While that runner was setting a good clip throughout, Billy Badger always looked to be travelling a treat for Dexter. He travelled so well in fact that he hooked out of the trail turning for home to launch his claim, nailed Tiger Thompson by the 100m and then went on to win by one and a quarter lengths on 3.10.1 for the 2600m, with the last 800m in 55.9 and the last 400m in 27.7.
Friday's win was the 5th for Billy Badger in 79 starts and takes his stake-earnings to over $77,000. In the form he is in, he sould nail further success over the winter for owners Ross and Angela Gordon.
Earlier in the night, Dexter had nailed a win for the stable with Awesome Speed, a three year old Bettor's Delight filly owned by long time stable supporter Warwick Sparks.
A good second on debut, Awesome Speed had support on the tote, but the concern was always going to be her wide draw. Obliged to go back early on, Awesome Speed hopped onto the three wide train from the 1500m. She got a decent drag into the race, but was left parked three wide from the 1000m. At this point Dexter made the decision to press on and by the 800m she had worked to the lead. Faced with plenty of challengers from the 400m, Awesome Speed would have been easily forgiven if she tired, but instead, showed great reserves of stamina to stave off all runners including the warmly supported Semiramide.
Awsome Speed showed on Friday that she is going to make a very nice racehorse and will be another runner to keep following over the winter.
