Diamonds N Cash massive in winter cup win
Deserted by punters after a first day break, Diamonds N Cash was allowed to go around in today's Marlborough Winter Cup at odds of 23-1. After stepping well he was put to sleep on the rails, was a mile off the leaders at the 800m, but after taking shortcuts, stormed home to grab favourite Forgotten Highway short of the line. The more favoured stablemate Wrangler got home well for third, albeit six lengths further back.
Diamonds N Cash is a three year old Rocknroll Hanover gelding and began his career in the North Island under Robert's tutelage last year. He was sent south in November to join the Woodend base and was an immediate winner on the grass at Methven. Thoughout his first campaign he was remarkably consistent winning three and placing on a further four occasions for owners Breckon Racing Ltd.
Well supported on day one, he was a bit awkward as the tape was released and went out of his gear. He settled well back and was never a factor after that. With regular driver John Dunn back in the cart today, Diamonds N Cash stepped well and took an early trail. However, after several lead changes, he was five back on the inside and well back inside the last 800m. As others started to skirt wide with runs, John took the gamble sticking to the inside and ended up following through favourite Forgotten Highway that was hitting the passing lane with purpose at the 200m. Still well in arrears of that runner at the 100m, he really sprouted wings, getting to the lead just short of the line in what was a huge win.
Today's win was the horse's 4th from the 14 starts and takes his season earnings to over the $33,000 mark, not a bad effort at all in his first season of racing. Wrangler again showed that he is a horse to follow over the winter, closing late with his run to get up for third just in front of the pacemaker Boomer Bailey that fought hard for 4th.
