The Captain continues his comeback

The Captain continues his comeback

After the disappointment of missing all of last season, things are looking a lot better for the Grinfromeartoear 7yr old Captain Dolmio in his early preparations for this year's New Zealand Cup. He followed up a trial placing last week behind Cash N Flow, with a good win at yesterday's Rangiora workouts.

After a super five year old season in which he won three of his ten starts (seven placings), a lot was expected of Captain Dolmio in his six year old season. However, a leg injury early last season and a patient group of owners that only wanted the best for their horse, saw him sit out the whole of the 2017-2018 season.

Put through all of his early preparation this year by former trainer and part-owner Matt Brinsdon, Captain Dolmio returned to Woodend Beach a couple of months ago and has pleased those closest to him with his progress.

Back at the trials last week, he was an ever closing second behind good pacer Cash N Flow which had led throughout. Yesterday at Rangiora and in the hands of Matt Anderson, deputising for John who is on a well earned holiday, Captain Dolmio was too good for top mare Dream About Me, running past her under a nice hold to win by a head in 2.36.7 for the 2000m stand, the last 800m in 57.6, the last 400m in 27.4.

Driver Matt Anderson was very happy with his charge.

"He felt really good."

"He's in a happy place at the moment."

Captain Dolmio was one of four starters for the stable on the day, with Nakuru (half sister to Miss Daisy, Code Black, Jack Pack) a winner, maiden Pro Surfer, the first foal of the good mare Surfin Swift a nice second and Westview runner Flashazz 5th in Nakuru's heat.
