Some new faces on track at Addington tonight
There is a hint of Spring in the air and with it we are starting to see some big name performers back on the track. Captain Dolmio looks a very good chance first up in the time honoured National Handicap at Addington this evening.
Captain Dolmio will square off with stablemate Letspendanitetogetha and four others in tonight's feature. He has been given a long preparation heading into his resumption and has had a couple of workouts and a trial to fit him for tonight. In the most recent of these he was placed third behind Letspendanitetogetha with another stablemate Alta Orlando splitting the pair. In what were good runs by all three, Letspendanitetogetha stepped well to lead, while Captain Dolmio off a 20m backmark ran home well under his own steam for third.
With just the one runner off the front tonight, the backmarkers have not faired badly with the handicaps. Captain Dolmio will be joined off the 20m mark tonight by The Fixer, Dream About Me and Classie Brigade. It should be a great race to watch and give an early hint as to how some are progressing towards this year's New Zealand Cup.
In a total contrast to the experienced runners in the National Handicap, we have three stable runners on debut tonight - Nakuru, Flashazz - Race Two and Pro Surfer - Race Five.
Nakuru, a half sister by Mach Three to both Code Black and Miss Daisy was a convincing qualifying trial winner last week at Ashburton. On that occasion, she led and held comfortably, looking a horse with a fair bit of potential. Flashazz, the first foal out of the well performed Pembrook's Delight was placed third in that qualifier after doing work over the last lap. Owned by the Westview Racing No 18 syndicate, she is also well regarded. From their draws tonight, both will need luck over the 1980m, but whatever they do tonight they are bound to improve on.
Pro Surfer is another on debut, in Race Five. He is a three year old Bettor's Delight gelding out of another good racemare in Surfin Swift. He has had a trial and a workout this time in to prepare for tonight. In the most recent of these at Ashburton he was a fast closing second in a swiftly run trial - home the last quarter in 26.6. Like our other debutantes, Pro Surfer has been poorly served with the draw. However, over the 2600m, the draw tends to be less of a factor and he is sure to be given his best chance. He is another very nice maiden.
Our first runner tonight is Johnny White in Race Three. He has been very good in his last two starts and last week finished off with real purpose after drawing the outside gate. He is only marginally better off tonight from barrier six, but should get his chance to get into the race at some point. He would be at least a place hope in what is a nice field.
Hayden's Meddle is Mr Consistent at the moment and following another good second here last week, looks well placed for another win. He is generally good from a stand and in a small eight horse field, will get his opportunity at some stage in the race.
The final stable rep this evening is De Lancome in the last. She was very good last week after getting a superb run in the race. She again draws well this evening and there is no reason why she would not go back to back in the winners circle.
