Matt nails a weekend double
After saluting the judge at Addington on Friday night with Huey Lewis, Matt Anderson was again enjoying success at Rangiora this afternoon with stable runner Onedin Reign. The four year old Sir Lincoln mare was having just her 13th race start with today's win being the third of her career.
Having just her third start for the season, Onedin Reign resumed at Oamaru back in September. However, since then she has had her share of niggles with a foot problem keeping her out of racing until the Addington meet 10 days ago.
"That run really trimmed her up nicely for today," said part-owner Gary Lane.
"She seems to just love the grass tracks and that win was her second on this track."
Today's race was the first start from a stand for Onedin Reign. After stepping away safely, but slowly, she was then sent forward by Matt, assuming the lead at the 1600m. When favourite Son Of A Tiger came forward with a lead inquiry Matt was happy to take a sit and get his chance up the passing lane. Turning for home, the favourite still had plenty to offer, but as soon as Onedin Reign got her chance up the lane, she rushed through, going away a comfortable winner by three quarters of a length at the line.
Gary felt that with plenty more grass track racing over the holidays that the mare should be easy to place.
"She'd get in nice into some of those handicap races and starting off the frontline you'd think she'd go well."
Today's win was Matt's 4th for the season from just 23 drives.
