Kotare Cullen produces big run to win cup
At just her second stand start and second start in the South Island, Kotare Cullen showed the ability that marked her one of the better fillies in the country last season in winning today's Motukarara Cup. She had to be brave to do so, holding out the stablemate Zadaka, that finished resolutely from the back, only to be denied victory by a head.
After stepping well this afternoon, Kotare Cullen was quickly off and able to find the top for John. Once in her favoured front-running capacity, the beautiful freegoer settled into her work, quickly stretching out the capacity field. Coming off the back the last time, Kotare Cullen was still full of steam and off for home. Well clear at the 300m, she was all out over the last 100m as the stablemate Zadaka came after her strongly, but managed to dig in enough to hold on for a deserved victory.
"She's gone fantastic hasn't she," said John post-race.
"She was always travelling but it sure is a long way up that straight here."
John was also rapt with the run of Zadaka, his first show of form for some time.
"He must have gone a big race."
"It's been a tough season for him racing against those better ones through the spring, but this sure was a drop-back."
"It's very pleasing to see him returning to something like his better form."
A now in-form Kotare Cullen will certainly be a horse to watch out for over the coming months.
Still a comparatively inexperienced horse, today's win was her 4th from just 12 race starts. With the manners that she showed today, she should be easy to place in some of the big handicap races still to run through the summer.
