It was a case of 1, 2 and 3 at Rangiora.

We only had the three runners go around at Rangiora yesterday and with a win and two placings, it was close to the perfect day. The sole win of the day came with the impressive Kotare Costa in the maiden.

With the aid of a small field and a good draw, Kotare Costa was able to lead early and then dictate soft terms in front. He always looked to be travelling a treat for John and after sprinting from home from the 400m, was always going to be too good.

Only a three year old, he appears to be learning all the time and yesterday's win was just the third start of his career for the Abells and Kotare Downs.

A race later and Onedin Reign and Spot On, both put in top runs to place second and third respectively behind Samskara in the day's feature.

Both horses were well away and gained good trips one out - Onedin Reign and fence - Spot On. At the 400m, Matt Anderson made a big run with Onedin Reign to loom large out wide. She kept coming with her run and while eroding the margin to the line, was in deficit of three quarters of a length behind the winner. Spot On was late clearing a pocket and stormed home for a very good third.

John had a further win for the day with the Matt Purvis trained Fun In The Dark, a convincing front-running drive doing the oracle. This win takes to 13 his winning tally for the holiday period.
