Two year olds stand out at Ashburton today

We just had the three runners engaged today at the Ashburton trials, but you could not help but be impressed with their efforts. A winning performance by Tyron's Bit Of A Lemon in 1.55.2 for the mile was an impressive effort, stamping him as a two year old of some promise.

Need You Know is a Bettor's Delight filly and the third foal out of Lady Antebellum. A full sister to good three year old Stars Tonight, Need You Know was a workout winner back in December. In today's qualifying trial, she was quickly off the gate to lead for driver Ross Houghton. She led a strung out field throughout and after a comfortable first half mile in 1.01, she came ran home in a quick last half in 56.3, the last quarter in 27.6. Always travelling well in the run to the line, she home on a comfortable two lengths winner. She looks another very nice filly in the stable ranks.

One Majic Kenny looked a likely candidate for the two year trotting classics if his qualifying trial win is any indication. Impeccably bred, a Majestic Son colt, out of One Under Kenny, One Majic Kenny is a half brother to the well performed trotter and former Harness Jewels winner King Kenny.

In his qualifying trial today, One Majic Kenny showed blistering speed off the gate, to lead on his ear early. After a comfortable first half mile in 1.02, he was allowed another comfortable quarter in 31 seconds coming off the back. Really let stride from the 400m, he ran home in 28.9 to hold on a comfortable one length winner. He is an impressive type.

The final runner for the day and arguably the most impressive was two year old Sportswriter gelding Tyron's Bit Of A Lemon. Out of Tyron's Alive, raced by his breeders Alan and Ian Neumann, Tyron's Bit Of A Lemon set tongue's wagging with his trial win in 1.55.2 for the mile.

Like his stablemates in the earlier heats, Tyron's Bit Of A Lemon led off the gate before trailling the Sam Smolenski runner Master Publisher from the 1000m. A very quick first 800m in 58 seconds looked to set things up for those of the speed.  Things really hotted up down the back with a 28 second quarter, before a final quarter run in 29.1, Tyron's Bit Of A Lemon outstaying Louis Litt (three back) and a game pacemaker Master Publisher.
