Some good looking chances for Methven Cup Day
John heads to Methven today with four nice chances. However, with a damp grass track and the traditional big fields, he will be looking for that bit of luck throughout.
The day starts with Madam Sass in Race Two, the maiden trot. A three year old Majestic Son filly, she has done a nice job in her trials and workouts to date.
"She will need to bring her manners to get a bit of it," said John.
"She has generally been pretty good in that regard, other than a gallop at the workouts the other week."
"While she can go close, she is a three year old filly, on debut and on a soft grass track so you have to keep that in mind."
In what appears a very open field of maidens, she should have every chance to deliver for her big set of owners - Westview Racing No 19 syndicate and The Witches of Westview No 2 syndicate.
In Race Three, we have the consistent Prodigal Guinness to go around.
"He got hammered twice in the running at Mot last time, so he did have his excuses."
"I guess that you would say he has been going near enough, so with any luck in the running he is a chance."
Manly Olsen (in picture) has been running against very good fields for some time, but does look to have dropped back in class a little bit in Race Four.
"He's definitely been beaten by some nice types and has never been far away."
"We've got a nice enough draw to work with so you wouln't think that he will be far away."
The final runner today is Somekindwonderful in Race Eleven.
An impressive Ashburton winner on debut, he struck a very good field at Addington second up.
"The draw didn't help and he had to do plenty of work."
"While he is definitely a chance, the draw is no help and he will need plenty of luck."
He looks one of the better chances in one of the more open looking races on the day.
