Need You Now perfectly drawn in fillies Group One
A convincing win in her first look at Alexandra Park last Friday night, Need You Now is again well drawn and a great chance in this week's Peter Breckon Caduceus Club Stakes on Inter-Dominion grand final night on Saturday. Amazing Dream and stablemate Spellbound will again be the two toughest to beat.
A beneficiary of a good draw last Friday and able to sit in and watch the speed battle unfolding between Spellbound (lead) and Amazing Dream (breeze), Need You Now was able to power up the passing lane inside the last 200m, eventually running away to a convincing victory by one and a quarter lengths. With the full trip run in 2.37.4, this was one of the fastest 2200m run by the fillies at Alexandra Park.
From barrier four this week, Need You Now is drawn to lead early and then has choices as to whether to hand up. It is hard to not see her as one of the toughest to beat again.
Stablemate Spellbound was massive in running second last week. She crossed easily enough to lead early, but spent most of the last 1600m attended to her outside by the very good filly Amazing Dream. The two tried to skip away on the turn, but it was Need You Now with the cold shoulder that was too good on this occasion.
Clearly Spellbound is back to her best form from last season as a two year old, but it may take a J Dunn special here for her to deliver with the other two fillies seemingly the better drawn. If the pace is frenetic as last week, John may elect to drive her for the high speed that she possesses and come over top of the other pair.
Amazing Dream is logically the one to beat. She put in a monster run last week and the enormity of the run only told over the last 100m. From a much better barrier this week, driver Natalie Rasmussen will no doubt have designs on the lead and if she can find the top, she will take a power of beating.
These are three very good fillies and you suspect that over the season there will be a number of fantastic duels. It may only be the draws that are the deciding point. All power to our pair of Need You Now and Spellbound this week.
