Stars Tonight and Heroes Square shine at Addington
Stars Tonight has probably been the stable's most consistent horse this campaign and was rewarded for his efforts with a strong win after leading. Heroes Square is one of the real rising stars of the stable, his third win tonight almost guaranteeing that he will be locking horns with the best three year olds in the country come derby night.
It was Stars Tonight that was the first to register a win tonight, defeating a strong field of intermediate grade pacers in a good time of 2.23.7 for the 1980m trip. Eased off the gate, he was soon up and challenging stablemate Jay Tee Tyron for the lead, heading to the front at the mile peg. Strongly attended to his outside by Bettathanfast over the last lap, Stars Tonight, always looked to be travelling well. As the field turned for home, he was first challenged to his inside by the stablemate, before Bettathanfast kept up a strong run to his outside. Kept up to his work to the line by driver Tim Williams, Stars Tonight proved much too strong, holding a three quarter length advantage. A closing half mile off the front in 55.7 made it much too tough for the chasers to run him down.
The win this evening was Stars Tonight's fifth for the season from just 15 starts and takes his stake-earnings to just shy of $100,000.
Stars Tonight proves too tough after leading over the 1980m
Heroes Square had impressed in his first two wins, but had to overcome a tricky second row barrier this evening to achieve win three. Able to ease off the inside early in the race, he was initially positioned sixth of the seven starters. After following around Burnham Boy from the back with a lap to go, he was finally able to get to the breeze at the 800m. It was at about this stage that Bob Butt driving second favourite Minstrel, started to up the tempo. Initially flat at the 600m, Heroes Square soon responed to John's urgings, but turning in still had a length to make up on that runner. Battling to get on terms with Minstrel at the 100m, John asked Heroes Square to find some more and find he did, making up the deficit and going to the line a narrow, but good winner.
Tonight's win will be a critical one in his development and education as a racehorse and what he showed over the last 100m is that he really knows how to find the line. With further improvement, he looks a realistic contender in the upcoming New Zealand Derby at the start of April.
Heroes Square makes it a hatrick of wins as he continues his charge towards the derby
