Korbyn looking to cap off a good weekend at Addington this afternoon

Stable junior driver Korbyn Newman has only been with us for just over a month, but already made a big statement at Addington on Friday night reining home two winners for Diamond Racing, both at big odds.

Previously employed by the Benny Hill stable with whom he started his career last season, Korbyn registered three winners in his first season of driving. With limited opportunities until recently, Korbyn had driven seven winners this season, before Friday night's double with Hayden's Meddle and Wyatt Waller.

Korbyn's first win on Friday came coutesy of Hayden's Meddle. Drawn wide he was able to cross early to a parked position outside eventual pacemaker Taxman. While having raced parked throughout, it was Hayden's Meddle that lay down the gauntlet to Taxman from the 400m and under a hard drive from Korbyn rolled to the lead turning in. While under pressure to his inside and outside all the way up the straight, he fought like a tiger to get home by a head over Franco Texas, with stablemate Anamajor as consistent as ever dead-heating for third. Another stablemate Soundslikeart was probably the run of the race, getting home really well to run 7th.

Friday's victory was the first for Hayden's Meddle since September 2018, repaying the loyalty of his great owner Warwick Sparks, one of the really great guys you meet in harness racing.

Korbyn's night was not done with however, with Wyatt Waller a last start winner for the stable, his drive in the last race on the night.

While stablemate and favourite Somekindawonderful was fast off the gate, running to an early lead, Korbyn drove Wyatt Waller patiently early to end up back last after the first 300m. After some tightening in the running at the 1400m, Wyatt Waller was able to improve its position to three back the outer and on a genuine tempo up front was well placed in the running.

With no further moves in the running, it was Somekindawonderful that still led turning for home, hotly challenged to its inside and outside. Meanwhile, Wyatt Waller finally into the clear was starting to charge with his run. Still giving the leaders a three length head start at the 200m, he came home with real purpose out wide to take the win by a half head margin, with Somekindawonderful brave in running 4th, just a neck away.

It was great to see a young man, new to the Robert and John Dunn fold being not only given his chance at Addington on Friday, but relishing the opportunity with two very good drives.

Korbyn gets the chance to extend an already great weekend with Prodigal Guiness with which he combines in junior drivers company in Race Five.

Prodigal Guinness reverted to the mobile last time out after consistent efforts from the stands. He had no luck from a wide barrier, being obliged to go forward early, then getting pushed back in the running, before running home solidly, but with no chance.

In today's race, he looks much better placed. He generally steps well from a stand and off the frontline here will have an opportunity to take up a good spot in the running. Providing he gets that little bit of luck you need, there would be no reason why Korbyn could not complete the perfect weekend with a hat-trick of wins.

Prodigal Guinness was a very good second first up from a stand

The only other runner for Diamond Racing today is a debutante, Action Packed, in Race Two. A Majestic Son two year old, out of Roydon Action, Action Packed is a half brother to All Royal Gal which was also trained by Robert and John. Owned by Alan, Ian and Vinnie Neumann, along with Brent Clarke and Geoff Evans, Action Packed has shown its share of promise in recent trial runs, albeit in much smaller fields.

From a wide gate first up today, things are made that much more difficult, but it will give John that bit of time to be patient early in the race. From there, it will be luck in the running that dictates fortunes, but he is certainly not to be discounted on the ability he has already shown.

Best of luck to the team today on what looks to be a sunny, but very cool Christchurch afternoon.
