Classic encounter anticipated in Group Two
As far as classic encounters go, this afternoon's Group 1 Turf Bar Trotters Mile definitely rates right up there in terms of expectation. The Dominion Handicap winner Sundees Son (in picture) locks horns with the new kid on the block in Bolt For Brilliance, while the Phil Williamson trained Majestic Man cannot be written off either in what should be a great end-of-year highlight.
A stunning winner of the Group One Dominion Handicap two starts ago, Sundees Son has continued a great run of form through the Spring and early Summer, his only miss being two starts ago, when checked at Kaikoura. Parked out on a hot pace by Majestic Man last start at Alexandra Park, Sundees Son was massive in posting a one length victory and in the process smashing the NZ Record, formerly held by Bolt For Brilliance.
Four year old Bolt For Brilliance has posted a similarly imposing formline this season, also with just the one miss, right at the start of his campaign. While fresh up after a couple of months away from the track, everything that he has done this campaign suggests that he is the heir apparent in the open class trotting ranks and is a deserving second favourite in today's big mile. From the best draw of the favoured three this afternoon, he looks sure to get the perfect trip right on the pace.
While Sundees Son and Bolt For Brilliance are set to dominate on the tote, the free running Majestic Man should not be left out of calculations either, especially after his brave run for second last time. He is one that looks sure to run a fast mile.
The race is sure to be a great spectacle and may prove a great pointer to the further upcoming Group One features.
