Methven double completes a great weekend for Korbyn

Stable junior driver Korbyn Newman has had quite a weekend. After reining roughie With Grace into second in the Harness Million for the three year old fillies Friday night, he then drove a double at Methven on Sunday, taking him to 12 wins for the season and sixth place in the Junior Drivers premiership.

Given the job of steering With Grace on Friday night, Korbyn handled the Bettor's Delight filly superbly. Beaten for speed off the gate, she settled four back the inside, a position that she would hold until the 500m. At that point, as the pressure was on up front, Korbyn was able to push one out, before finding the back of Avana (three wide) turning in. Drawn widest of all, she came stormimg home to run a clear second, albeit four and a half lengths behind impressive winner and stablemate Off N Gone at the line. The placing was the first at Listed level for Korbyn.

Two days later Korbyn headed to Methven, where he would go on and bag two wins - Archman and Better Fly.

Archman was a catch drive for Gore trainer Shane Matheson and the day's most impressive winner, after getting home by nine and a half lengths. Having received a perfect run in the trail throughout, Korbyn was quickly out to challenge with Archman turning in and at the line was a distance in front of his rivals.

A few races later and Korbyn was again in the winners circle, this time with the Robert Dunn trained Better Fly. Owned by John and Maurice McDermott, Better Fly was haviug her first start for the stable and was backed into short-priced favouritism. Caught wide early, Better Fly took her time to press forward to the front, but was at the head of affairs with a lap to go. While the Bettor's Delight five year old always appeared to travel well, she was well and truly under siege at the 200m and all out at the line as she held on tenaciously for win three of her seventeen start career.

Better Fly was a very good winner in her first start since joining the stable

Korbyn has really stepped up in terms of his driving in the last 12 months and will look to build further on his impressive start to the year.
